Teenage Alcohol Abuse, The Interrelationship Between Coping Skills And Abusive Drinking, And The Need For Coping Skills Training

Recent teenage alcohol abuse statistics reveal that alcohol abuse among teens is increasing in the United States. What are some of the reasons for this? Quite a few chemical dependency specialists articulate that beer, wine, and liquor advertisements brought into being by the media are a significant by the media are an important reason for the escalation of teen alcohol abuse.

Other alcohol addiction professionals emphasize the point that the increase in adolescent alcohol abuse is due to the acceptability and accessibility of wine, beer, and liquor in our society. Still other alcohol addiction specialists affirm that more than a few of our young people get involved in dangerous drinking because of the increased tension that they go through.

From a slightly different vantage point, since both parents in quite a few families work, the lack of parental guidance evidently has to play a major part in the spread of adolescent alcohol abuse. And last of all, diverse alcohol addiction authorities emphasize the point that the escalation of teen alcohol abuse is due, at least partially, to our lax society.

One feature of youth alcohol abuse that looks as if it under reported in the alcohol addiction research results, alternatively, is the nonexistence of educational programs that teach teenagers how to augment their coping skills so that their hazardous and careless drinking behavior is radically lessened or done away with. Stated more explicitly, scientific research has shown that there is an indirect correlation between poor coping skills and hazardous and abusive drinking.

In effect, this means that the more mediocre the coping skills, the greater the frequency of alcohol abuse. To the degree that this is a truthful claim, why isn't coping skills training a key part of the academic prospectus in all of our high schools, junior high schools, and elementary schools?

Let us manufacture a scenario for the purpose of explanation. Let us imagine a society in which all people are taught how to achieve good coping skills all the way from kindergarten up to and including the twelfth grade. In such a society, when life gets difficult, people who are "coping skills experts" will be able to respond in a more healthy and more creative way, contrary to others who are unsuccessful in their attempts to put their coping skills into action.

Stated another way, students who display first rate coping skills will be more able to think clearly and show signs of top-shelf decision making as opposed to teens failed to obtain top-of-the-line coping skills, are attracted to the "quick fix" of unhealthy drinking.

What would happen in the above "ideal" society, moreover, if teenagers not only got extraordinary coping skills instruction but also got a top shelf education that accentuated the long term and short term harmful consequences associated with drug abuse and alcohol abuse? Emphasizing these types of teenage alcohol and drug abuse facts, along with more highly developed coping skills instruction, it is affirmed, would help teenagers keep away from the obvious charm interlinked with teenage drinking and, consequently, would notably diminish the injurious drinking behavior shown by adolescents in our country.

There are without a doubt various legitimate reasons why so many of our teenagers drink in a hazardous manner. Such a knotty predicament demands a broad based and more applicable response by our parents, students, politicians, and educators so that our youth can learn how to cope with life's predicaments in a more productive and responsible way instead of gravitating to careless and abusive drinking to solve their difficulties.
