Improving The World Means Changing Yourself Inside And Changing Your Behavior

When Mahatma Gandhi said "we must be the change we wish to see in the world," he may not have realized how many individuals would be encouraged by his brave words. If anyone had the right to make such a statement, it was Mahatma Gandhi. He was so determined to make his country free of English rule that he was prepared to go through torture, threats, and abject poverty just to bring improvements to the world. Even though his words have been to some extent diluted by their worldwide recognition, they still strike people nowadays. As success quotes go, it is one of the more inspiring ones. Particularly to people who enjoy motivational and success quotes, it is powerful. Even the cheesy "be the change" bumper stickers may, sometimes, make people stop and contemplate, as all the very best success quotes do.

Stopping and thinking, however, was not all that Mahatma Gandhi had in mind. Just contemplating improving the world does not truly do anything to help anybody. In an effort to be the change, you must be prepared to give up everything including your sense of identity. You must attach yourself to your ideals so that there is no distinction between your ideas and actions. This is what it takes to be the change.

Although Martin Luther King's "I have a Dream" oration is more popular, Mahatma Gandhi's words seem to have encouraged a far greater slew of causes. These days, people use the expression "be the change" to articulate support for Healthcare reform, urban renewal, the environment, and many other causes. Essentially, everyone who is out there trying to make the world a nicer place can, to a greater or lesser degree, link their battle to these well-known words.

Most of the leaders, young and old, who are truly working to make the world a better place are not very flashy about it. Normally, the people you see running for office or wearing political pins and bumper stickers are not the ones who are really out there, day after day, doing the work. The real heroes are often unknown. Even though everybody has heard of Mahatma Gandhi, few people know about many of the additional activists who were also trying to get the British out of India. They were satisfied to work in obscurity, hopeful that someday their dreams of freedom would come to pass.

It does not matter what you are working for. If it is imperative enough for you to surrender a safe, secure life to work for change, it has value. Do not stress about being recognized for what you do. It is enough to "be the change" and let the community feel your love.
