A Physical Education And Health Teacher Teaches Her Pupils About The Significant Issues Involved In Alcohol Addiction Signs Miss Jackson was a health instructor at the most under financed private high school in the county. Although she had been teaching for only a few years, she had already gained a reputation as a person with teaching methods that stimulated and motivated students to learn and to think.
For instance, one Monday morning she addressed the students in her classroom and said the following: "For the next two or three days we are going to learn about some basic alcoholism signs from a more wind-ranging perspective and we are also going to learn about several of the most typical signs of alcoholism from a more specific viewpoint."
"Not all of these alcoholism warning signs will definitely substantiate that a drinker with a drinking problem is an individual who is addicted to alcohol, but the more signs that a person displays, the greater the probability that she or he is an individual who is addicted to alcohol."
Miss Jackson then told the class that each individual would be responsible for researching two alcohol dependence signs and then presenting his or her conclusions to the other class members via a six minute oral presentation.
The day after all of the students completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a piece of paper with a list of all the alcoholism signs that were discussed and presented in class and in the presentations. Miss Jackson then asked the students in her classroom to go over the list and rank the top nine alcoholism signs that were most indicative of alcoholism. After approximately fifteen minutes, Miss Jackson collected the sheets of paper and told the students in her class that after she analyzes the numbers, she will reveal her findings the next school day.
Miss Jackson told her students to go over the numbers and then to raise their hand if they had any questions, concerns, or issues. Within 30 or 40 seconds, just about every pupil in the classroom raised his or her hand. It was apparent that the students had some issues, questions, or concerns about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism experts. For instance, almost every person in the class had an issue with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism professionals, namely, "Do you feel extremely ill when you abstain from drinking?"
Miss Jackson then told her students why this answer was the most straightforward indicator of alcohol dependency. She highlighted the fact that the key difference between alcohol abuse and alcoholism is the physical addiction that is experienced with alcohol dependency and not with alcohol abuse.
Essentially this means that when an individual who is addicted to alcohol suddenly stops drinking, she or he will suffer through alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the importance of alcohol withdrawal symptoms in the life of the individual who is addicted to alcohol, the pupils started to understand the fundamental difference between alcohol abuse and alcoholism.
A few minutes later the bell rang, indicating the end of the class. Based on the excitement manifested by the students when they were leaving the classroom, Miss Jackson knew that she had stimulated and motivated her students to stop and think about an important health issue and social problem that exists in our culture.
